Before the dragons choose

Shattered Birthright by Kate Seger

Two heirs can share a birthright and still mean very different things by the word kingdom.

Shattered Birthright begins with sisters who don't know each other. Sorelle's life is rooted in Lowtown, where she steals medicine to keep children alive. Zarielle has learned the language of influence. When the dragons answer them both, each brings a different understanding of the city they might rule.

Here’s a spoiler-light guide to where each sister begins.

SORELLE: START WITH THE PERSON IN FRONT OF HER

Watch who needs help before anyone talks about a throne. A large political promise can sound different when you already know the people waiting for it to become useful. Notice when a decision protects someone immediately, and when it asks them to wait.

ZARIELLE: START WITH THE ROOM

Watch who can speak, who must ask permission, and who gets listened to. Influence is a practical skill in a court. Notice what a character has to accept in order to gain enough of it to act.

WHEN THEIR PATHS MEET

Their disagreements bring two questions together: what will help people now, and who will have the power to make the next decision? Keeping both in view leaves room to understand why the sisters might want the same throne for different reasons.
